From the Mountains to the Sea Reception in Bedford, MA

Bedford, MA Public Library

From the Mountains to the Sea: Plants, Trees, and Shrubs of New England combines art and science in a show by members of the New England Society of Botanical Artists that will be on display at the Bedford Free Public Library from March 13 to May 8.  The show began at the The Art Complex in Duxbury, MA in May of 2013.  It has since traveled to the Montshire Museum of Science in Norwich VT, and the Bartlett Arboretum in Stamford, CT.  After The Bedford Library, it moves to  the Audubon Environmental Center in Bristol, RI  and then on to the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, Boothbay, ME. This juried show builds on an important history of botanical art and celebrates the diversity and beauty of plants from our own backyards.

An artist reception was held Sunday, March 23 at the Bedford Library.

Artist/educator Sarah Roche will give a talk on Sunday, April 6 from 5 to 6pm. Roche will trace the changing role of botanical artists through history. She will explain why, despite technological advances in printing, the work of botanical artists remains so important today, straddling the worlds of art and science. She will also describe the influences that shaped her career as an artist and teacher.

Portfolio Sharing Meeting

South Shore Arts Center, Cohasset, MA

March 8, 2014

The March meeting of NESBA was a portfolio sharing. Esther Klahne gave us some info and insights into the "what's and why's" of her paintings. Following this several members agreed to share 2-3 or more pieces of their work and all members had the opportunity to walk around to the participating artists and their portfolios to view and ask questions about the work.
