Landscape architect David Valbracht turned to botanical illustration to develop a better method for identifying trees. A guest researcher at the Arboretum, David gathers plant samples from his studies in the collections and arranges them in his studio as they grew in life. These “tree portraits” emphasize drawing as a method to develop observation and identification skills, and at the same allow for personal expression. The exhibition centerpiece is a thirty-foot mural illustrating over 100 species of trees, grouped according to the Arboretum’s landscape plan. Valbracht studied landscape architecture at Harvard University, botanical art at the Wellesley College Botanical Garden, and is currently attending the Academy of Realist Art, Boston.

Molly Peacock presentation on March 9, 2013

Molly Peacock, author of The Paper Garden: An Artist Begins Her Life's Work at 72 , spoke on March 9, 2013 at the Wellesley Library to an audience of botanical artists, garden club members and fans as far away as Rhode Island!

Her hour-long talk and power point presentation encompassed the life of Mary Delany, who lived in the 1700s. Molly entwined the story of Mrs. Delany's personal life with her discovery of botanical art. Mrs. Delany created a new form of art with her mixed-media collage. Her paper botanicals represent the flora of her time and the astounding botanical accuracy of any botanical painter of her time. This amazing body of work is made up of 985 works of art! Molly Peacock's book will tell you more! You may find out more about Molly, Mary Delany, and her botanical collages on line. Thank you to Lucy Sur, NESBA VP of Programs, for scheduling this event!
