Portfolio Workshop with Linda Oliver

New England Society of Botanical Artists presents: "Portfolio Workshop with Linda Oliver"

NESBA member Linda Oliver is going to teach a one-day workshop in which you will create a protective archival enclosure for the storage, and presentation, of your art work.

Linda has custom-designed this portfolio based upon enclosures used in the preservation of art on paper. Each student will create an 11" × 14" portfolio, a popular size for botanical artists. She will provide component parts measured and pre-cut. An illustrated hand-out accompanies the workshop, providing detailed instructions for creating portfolios customized to your artworks' dimensions.

Linda will also bring a selection of pre-cut decorative papers. Time permitting, she will show you how to fold a square sheet of paper into a simple, yet elegant, enclosure for business cards.

All materials and instructional handouts are included.

Date: Wednesday, April 18, 2012
Hours: 10 am to 4pm (one hour for lunch on your own)
Location: Wellesley College Greenhouse Visitors' Center
Cost: $45.00 (make check payable to "NESBA")
Sign up: See contact info in corresponding email.
Maximum number of participants: 12

About our instructor:

* Linda Oliver's first career involved the natural sciences, working for both the National Parks and U. S. Forest Service. Eventually, experience at several Historic Sites, (living history demonstrations and historic preservation), led to her second career: Library Preservation, which evolved into Book and Paper Conservation. The next eighteen years' training and experience included Conservation of Books, and of Art on Paper; Archival Matting & Framing; and the custom design & construction of Conservation Enclosures (protecting artwork, books and more complex three-dimensional objects).

Fabulous Ferns!

Go on a fern foray with Elizabeth Farnsworth, illustrator and co-author of the Peterson Field Guide to the Ferns of Northeastern North America. Using the diverse fern collections of the Ferguson Greenhouses, explore fern anatomy, architecture, life cycle, ecology, and microscopic characteristics. See the features to look for when identifying ferns in the wild. There will be plenty of time for sketching ferns and their diagnostic characters, plus question-and-answer time about these amazing plants.

For lunch, you can either bring your own, purchase something from the Leaky Beaker Café in the Science Center, or walk to local shops.

Your instructor, Elizabeth Farnsworth, has asked you to bring your sketchbook and pencils or pens (whichever is your preferred medium for sketching), and colored pencils for recording various anatomical structures.
