From The Mountains To The Sea Website Goes Live!

Our upcoming traveling exhibit of native New England plants now has its own website! We deeply appreciate the great effort , technical expertise and design skills of NESBA members John Perry and Regina Gardner Milan, who made this a reality. Thanks to Joyce Westner and her committee for their vision in creating this website to help publicize and educate, and to show some of the work that will be in the show.

Take a look!!!!

Mountains to the Sea - ASBA Grant

Dear NESBA Members,

NESBA has received a very generous grant from the American Society of Botanical Artists to help fund the "Mountains to the Sea" exhibit, which opens this coming May. We are indebted to Joyce Westner who applied for the grant several months back. The announcement of NESBA winning this prestigious award was made at the Saturday night Banquet at the ASBA Conference in Chicago on October 20, 2012. There was a great ovation by the NESBA attendees (and the whole crowd!) when the announcement was made. We are very proud of Joyce and her team for the work they are doing to make this upcoming exhibit a major NESBA event.

Here is Joyce's email, as she just received the official letter:
Congratulations to all of our members. I just received this letter from the ASBA Grant Chairperson Lee McCaffree:
“Congratulations on being chosen to receive the Julius I. Brown Grant from the ASBA. The project of the NESBA submitted by Joyce Westner creates a botanical art exhibit and support events to travel through the New England states to increase the public awareness of native plants.”
The $3,000 grant will help in every aspect of the exhibit, and we are grateful to ASBA for their confidence in our project!

Congratulations to NESBA member Carrie Megan!

Carrie Megan has I won "The Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts Graphic Award" for her graphite drawing of Ninebark, which was in the 99th Annual Allied Artists of America Juried Art Exhibition at the National Arts Club in NYC.

Congratulations Carrie!

Pictures from Tower Hill Botanic Garden

NESBA members enjoyed a lovely, crisp fall day at the Tower Hill Botanic Gardens in Boylston, MA on October 13.
After a brief business meeting and refreshments, the group took a walking tour of the gardens and woods. Led by John Trexler, Executive Director emeritus, we heard about the history of the gardens, and took particular notice of ferns and wildflowers. He had many wonderful tales to tell about the garden, trees, and architectural pieces. The Gardens are very much alive in winter with a Limonaia and Orangerie housing non-hardy plants all season long, so if you missed the October outing, do try to visit Tower Hill any time of the year!
These are just a few photos taken that day!

Congratulations to member Sandy Adams!

In fact, Sandy was instrumental is getting the program off the ground many years ago! Hope everyone can stop by to see Sandy and her exhibit!
See Sandy's note below!

Hi All,

My first solo exhibit, at Fox Hill, 10 Longwood Drive, Westwood! 22 paintings all "speaking to each other" - the whole "family" together for the first time. The paintings behaved and looked surprisingly good. Hoping to make a bit of room for new ones yet to come.

If you have a few minutes to spare, Fox Hill is a nice place for this exhibit, and I would love seeing you after all the commotion and pleasure of the Chicago conference. I'm sure you learned lots and had fun.

Thanks for considering this event. 10/23 at 4 PM.

Best to all,

Sandy Adams

Brush Gallery reception held on Saturday, September 22.

NESBA thanks Eileen Byrne, Director of the Brush Gallery and her Board, for the hosting a lovely reception for us on September 22. About 45 people were able to attend and enjoy the paintings and a bit of wine and hors d'oeuvres. Chapter president, Nancy Savage spoke to the group about what our chapter does and about the history of botanical art. About ten of our artists then spoke briefly about their paintings in the show, and about being a part of NESBA. Thanks go out to Nancy Horrall for chairing this exhibit. It is up until October 27! Please go and see it! It's a fantastic display of our work. Much of the work is for sale, and lots of prints and notecards are for sale, too! Enjoy it!

Chicago "Small Works" Reminder

If you are attending the ASBA Conference in October, and plan to submit a painting for the "Small Works" Exhibit, your painting is due by September 15, 2012.

Thanks to Lois Jackson, NESBA member, for this tip:
Anyone planning on entering a piece in the Small Works Exhibit, make sure that you review the very specific framing requirements. I ordered the required 12 x 12 frame from Dick Blick, then discovered that they don't stock pre-cut mats in those dimensions. That's fine if you have a framer that you work with to cut your mats. If not, American Frame will cut to order.

Cape Cod Painting Day

NESBA Members may join Ellen Duarte in her gardens on Cape Cod for another day of painting.
Thank you to Ellen for this summer event, set for Monday, August 20. Let Ellen know if you would like to go! She will give you all of the details!

Congratulations to NESBA member Ellen Gaube who has had a drawing accepted by the Hunt Institute for the 14th Annual International Exhibition of Botanical Art & Illustration! This is a great honor and privilege for botanical artists! Congratulations, Ellen!
