NESBA Member Donates Art to Oncology Center

Stephanie Whitney-Payne just completed a series of four botanicals for the Oncology Center of Mt. Ascutney Hospital in Windsor, Vermont. They were of plants used as the basis of chemotherapy drugs, including Vinca, Pacific Yew, May Apple, and Asian Happy Tree.

Vinca (Periwinkle)
Four major vinca alkaloids are in clinical use:
vinblastine, vinorelbine, vincristine, and vindesine.

Stephanie says:
"As a cancer survivor I felt I wanted to do something for this little country hospital and they were so thrilled to get this artwork. They are there for anyone who wants to see them at the Oncology Center. I am told the delicacy and beauty of the plants themselves, as depicted in the artwork, belie the ferocity of their attack on cancer cells. Seems to give everyone a new perspective and respect for everything that grows in the garden."
Pacific Yew
Used in the making of Taxol.
