NESBA Informal Outing in February

From Nancy

Hi everyone,

There is an exhibit of Dutch drawings at the MFA through March 6. There are
a few botanicals and two Maria Sibylla Merians in it!! Click here for the Globe article. Many of you may have read the article (and may
have already gone to see it!)

A small group of us were talking about going to it, seeing the new MFA wing,
and having lunch! We are planning to do it on Friday, February 11, meeting at 10:30 am at the Huntington Avenue entrance to the museum.

Anyone wishing to go, please join in!! No need to rsvp....if the plan should change, eg due to snow (!!) then I'll send another email. Otherwise, do try to come!!! There are about six of us already hoping to go!! It will be a great way to meet up again mid-winter!

Methods in Botanical Art

METHODS IN BOTANICAL ART

Easton Public Library

Opening Reception: Saturday, January 15, 2011 ~ 12:00 – 3PM

Exhibition and Sale of artwork, needle arts, and jewelry by Christine M. Leddy

The Easton Public Library is proud to host an exhibition of works by local Botanical Artist Christine Leddy.

The botanical art tradition has evolved over the centuries from a very structured scientific method to a more artistic interpretation. Contemporary botanical artists are taking a fresh exciting approach to their representations of nature.

Christine Leddy is not only an accomplished watercolor and colored pencil artist of both flora and fauna, her endeavors also extend to needle arts and jewelry. Her needle work includes many techniques from centuries past, such as English Stumpwork, Smocking, Silk Ribbon Embroidery, French Boutis and Monogramming. These antique methods have been applied to today’s textiles, blending the old with the new.

One example of this technique is a unique hand-sewn silk purse attached to an antique sterling silver frame, embroidered with birds and flowers in silk thread, and smocked with crystals and pearls. Her work and attention to detail is meticulous and fine, a rarity in today’s market of mass production.

This show encompasses much of her collection of botanical illustrations and art in watercolor and colored pencil, embroidered items, and jewelry. Many of the items will be for sale.

For information, please call: (203) 434-3922 or (203) 261-0134.
